Birch, oak, ash and alder: a Baltic hardwood guide
Species affects density, ignition and the way a product is presented to customers. Moisture and log dimensions still need to be specified separately.
Birch
Birch is widely recognised, lights readily and provides a bright flame. It works well as a central product in merchant and retail ranges.
Oak
Oak is dense and generally burns more slowly. Buyers often position it as a premium option for stove users.
Ash
Ash offers a balanced profile between birch and oak and can support a middle tier or mixed-hardwood offer.
Alder
Alder is lighter and quick to ignite. It is familiar in Nordic sauna and cooking applications as well as general fireside use.
