Firewood moisture: what a wholesale specification should say

A statement such as ‘kiln dried’ is not a complete product specification. Professional buyers should define how moisture will be measured and accepted.

Set an average and a maximum

An average alone can hide individual wet pieces. State both the acceptable batch average and the maximum sample reading.

Define the test method

Specify where logs are sampled, whether they are freshly split and which calibrated measurement method is used. Consistent sampling makes results comparable.

Name the required record

If your procurement process needs a batch record or other evidence, add it to the order. Do not assume that a moisture target automatically includes scheme certification.

Protect the product after drying

Covered, ventilated storage and suitable transport packaging help preserve the agreed condition between production and resale.
